Newsjacking?

What in the world is newsjacking? David Meerman Scott defines newsjacking as:

“The process by which you inject your ideas or angles into breaking news, in real-time, in order to generate media coverage for yourself or your business.”

In a keynote speech from Mr. Scott, he tells a story of the Oakley sunglass company giving the trapped Chilean miners each a pair of sunglasses. The result was a whole lot of CSR & publicity…. oh and a projected $41 million in equivalent advertisement time.

As account manager at Upright Communications, I have been given the responsibility as social media manager for several accounts. One account, in particularly, was given an opportunity to experience newsjacking. In the location of the company, there was a news story shared on Twitter about a man whose tires and wheels were stolen off of his car. The trend of stealing tires and wheels has been a noticeable trend in the area. After clearance from proper management, the company extended a special discount to get the man back on the road again.

The entire newjacking process was such a rush and exciting!

The victim and his family has vowed to be a customer and sincerely appreciated the special offer. Although, the coverage did not hit the media, we did inject our ideas into breaking news, in a real-time order and it was exposed on Twitter.

Redbull Flugtag Pilot ’11

About this time last year my teammates pushed me off of a 3-story high flight deck and I flew 22 feet into the Channelside Bay. Why would I do this? Redbull Flugtag!

The team at set-up night.

Redbull Flugtag is an event that host teams attempting to fly a man-made  aircraft. The event took place in Tampa, Fla., and attracted more than 100,000 people! The Brickhouse Tavern and Tap team applies and was chosen to participate! Tiffany, Sarah, Heather, Tara and I created the design of the aircraft and collaborated with a team of engineers who developed the device!

The event was so much fun!

How did Brickhouse get involved: It all began with 6 gals who were convinced that Flugtag could bring a ton of publicity to the restaurant.

Application: Redbull must screen all applicants. This process required a rough draft of flying machine and reasons as to why the team should be selected to particpate. I created the website that was used for our application process. The video on the sit was filmed by a student who worked at the restaurant.  Check out our website.

Building stiletto : A team of engineers put together the major components of the air craft and the team dazzled it up = D

What was learned :

1. To be on point at all times. This was a very high profile event with media outlets all over the place. As a team member and pilot I was representing Brickhouse Tavern and Tap.

2. Be prepared for interviews. Journalist from all over were covering the event and with that being said, I must have done over 100 interviews. One of the interviews took place on the flight deck just before take off. There was no hint that an interview would take place so last minute.

3. Think fast. The winds were the major concern for the event as they were super strong. This altered original flight plan and caused me to move faster than expected during flight.

Over all the event gave me a glimpse into the word of publicity, brand representation, promoting, public speaking and much more!

#Hashtags & #SEO

The use of hash tags is growing and it is growing at a rapid speed! Hash tags can be found on Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook. The really cool thing about hash tags is that it helps with search engine optimization (SEO). This is a really great tool.

In my situation I use the hash tags on the LFC Pinterest page. This is a great way to find something and use the hash tags while re-pinning. Zooming-in on LFC publics and doing my best to create exposure to the public, I have used the hash tags as a secret weapon. For example, LFC is focusing on the Disney Public. People LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Disney World and everything about it. I have found many blogs about people who travel to Disney and document their entire trip. Creating a new pin-board on the LFC just about Disney.

Items have been reposted and this is great! Exposure is on the rise!

…Rome was not built in a day… still have a lot of work to do to create publicity!
